On July 25, 2017, Kenneth Manzanares allegedly killed his wife, Kristy Manzanares, on-board the Emerald Princess.
The murder took place at around 9 PM off the coast of Alaska. Witnesses said that they heard screaming, and reported seeing the man with blood on his hands, along with Kristy lying on the floor covered in blood. When one witness asked Kenneth what happened, Kenneth said, “She would not stop laughing at me.” Witnesses also told investigators that Kenneth then proceeded to drag her bloody body towards the balcony. One of the witnesses reported that he ran in, grabbed Kristy by the ankles, and dragged her back inside.
According to an affidavit by FBI Special Agent Michael Watson, when medical personnel responded to the scene, they found Kristy with severe head trauma, and blood splattered all over the stateroom. She was pronounced dead at 9:20 PM.
An FBI spokesperson said that the crime scene was pretty small, and that they conducted about 200 interviews with passengers, family, and crew.
Kenneth Manzanares attended his first court hearing on Thursday afternoon, dressed in an orange jumpsuit. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 10. The judge did not grant bail because Manzanares is considered a flight risk and a danger to the community.
The Emerald Princess was on a seven day Alaskan cruise from Seattle, Washington, when this incident occurred.
Princess Cruises made a statement saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and all those impacted by this tragic event.”
Passengers on-board the ship were finally allowed to disembark at 8:30 PM on Wednesday in Juneau, Alaska, after authorities lifted an all day lockdown. The ship then continued on it’s scheduled itinerary, with the exception of a scenic tour around the Tracy Arm fjord being canceled.
