The First Adults Only Cruise Ship Has Arrived

On October 31, 2017, the founders of new cruise line, Virgin Voyages, announced that their first ship will be adults only when it debuts.

This groundbreaking news was announced at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy by Virgin Voyages’ President and CEO, Tom McAlpin, and Richard Branson, at the keel laying ceremony. Anyone under the age of 18 years old, is not allowed to sail on the new ship. For some cruisers, this is exactly what they’ve been waiting for. A cruise where they don’t have to worry about the annoyance of unattended and rowdy kids. It will be interesting to see how this works, and if any other major cruise lines will implement this rule on any of their ships.

But wait! There’s more! Virgin Voyages also announced that 86 percent of the cabins aboard the 2,860 unnamed passenger vessel will be balcony cabins, and 93 percent of the cabins will be ocean view.

The two also unveiled the logo for the new line (as seen above). McAlpin said it was inspired by the company’s airline, Virgin America. It features a “mermaid guide,” and the color scheme is primarily silver and grey with a little bit of red.

Their first ship is set to debut in 2020 and is going to showcase a whole new take on the industry. Not only will the ship be kid-free, they have engineered a technology that turns waste water from the ship back into electricity, with the goal of trying to reduce the company’s carbon footprint. She is set to sail from Miami to the Caribbean when she debuts. Bookings are now open at virginvoyages.com.
