As major Hurricane Madeline heads toward the Hawaiian Islands, Norwegian Cruise Lines has been forced to change the itinerary for their Hawaiian based ship, Pride of America.
The Pride of America, which departed Honolulu August 27 for a week long cruise, has canceled its August 31 sailing at Kailua Kona and its September 1 sailing at Kauai. The ship will instead spend one day at sea and another sailing along the Na Pali coast.
NCL released a statement saying, “We continue to monitor the storm’s path and will update guests should any further itinerary changes occur.”
Hurricane Madeline is currently a category 4 hurricane. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour and has already prompted warnings across the region. A Tropical Storm Warning and Hurricane Watch are in effect for Hawaii County. A Tropical Storm Watch is also in effect for Maui County, including the islands of Maui Molokai and Lanai.
According to the National Hurricane Center, hazards of the storm that pose a threat to land include strong winds, heavy rainfall and swells that potentially could damage the east-facing shorelines of Hawaii County and eastern Maui.
The Pride of America is expected to return to Honolulu on September 3.
